Sustainable development is the organizing principle for meeting human development goals while simultaneously sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and ecosystem services on which the economy and society depends. The desired result is a state of society where living conditions and resources are used to continue to meet human needs . NIFA "promotes sustainable agriculture through national program leadership and funding for research and extension," "offers competitive grants programs and a professional development program," and "collaborates with other federal agencies." Sustainable development is a notion that first appeared in in the Brundtland report, Our Common Future. The report was produced by the Brundtland Commission, convened by the UN in and was welcomed by the UN's General Assembly in Resolution 42/ 7. It is diverse. To achieve sustainability, this is a good starting point for the goals that we (all eaters) need to set for agriculture. Our current agricultural methods consume fossil energy and are net contributors of greenhouse gases.
